HomeThe Problem
Too many of our Georgetown County neighbors live in overcrowded conditions in substandard houses like the one above.
More than 9,000 people live in poverty. Their lack of education limits them to low-paying jobs, and they are trapped. They cannot afford a decent place to live.
The Habitat for Humanity Solution
Habitat solves this problem by building decent, affordable houses. We give people the chance to become homeowners, to break the cycle of poverty and to become productive community citizens.
Not a Giveaway
Habitat for Humanity houses are a hand-up not a hand-out. Our families purchase their homes with a $800 down payment, 400 hours of “sweat equity” and monthly no-interest mortgage payments averaging $290.
Their low incomes prevent these families from qualifying for conventional mortgages, so Habitat is their only chance at moving toward self-sufficiency by becoming homeowners.
